"Prevention is always better than cure"
Effective disaster recovery for the small and medium sized business can very often be a low or zero cost option. Simply by making better use of your existing systems and applications, or adding some extra resources is all it takes.
A few examples of this:
Make sure your server is suitable, and not a custom-built PC. A typical cost for a small business server with five computers connecting to it can be under £1,000.
This financial burden can be lessened with flexible financing options and fixed-term leasing.
By having a server rather than just a PC, you will benefit from improved fault tolerance:
Mirrored storage and hard disk drives: Disk drives are the most likely part of any system to fail, so it's advisable to always have mirrored disks to ensure the system keeps running if one should fail.
Redundant power supply: A low cost solution should the primary power supply should fail.
UPS (uninterruptible power supply): A simple thing like a power dip can cause a server component to fail. If the server crashes during this dip, the software may also become corrupted and prevent a reboot. A suitable UPS can cost as low as £60.
Check the server environment is correct: Considerations on the server location are.. Will it be accidentally switched off or unplugged, get too hot or cold, share an unhealthy power source, and be at risk of water or damp?
